Emily Doak - Dance & Yoga
Emily Doak has been dancing since childhood following, quite literally, in the footsteps of her older sister. She is continually inspired by the many forms of movement possible within the singular body. This intrigue has led her to study many styles of dance including ballroom, Latin and other partnership forms, modern, post-modern and contemporary, Butoh, hip hop, African, ballet and jazz. She trained intensly in high school under the instruction of Jan Justis and Eulanda Shead as well the Cleo Parker Robinson School of Dance.
Later she performed and choreographed with the Denver Independent Choreographer's Project, then began training in the art of ballroom and Latin dancing in Denver with local and national coaches Dennis Lyle, Jane Zainer, Donald Johnson, Kazia Kozak, Ron Montez, and others. She also trained in modern, post-modern, and world dances at Naropa University in Boulder. She has danced competitively in American Rhythm with her professional partner Ray Ulibarri. Emily is a Dance Vision International Dance Association (DVIDA) certified instructor. She continues to improve her craft through a variety of technical practices, performances, choreography, artistic direction, show production, and student development. She attained her Registered Yoga Teacher status with Yoga Alliance at the Samadhi Center for Yoga and Meditation in Denver, where she has expanded her knowledge beyond the physical practice of asana into realms of meditation and spirituality. She is a Registered Teacher with Yoga Alliance. Through her combined knowledge of dance and yoga she is able to offer unique instruction to students of all kinds including specific techniques to improve awareness and mind-body connection to performance oriented dancers. She enjoys guiding students to use the body as a vehicle to access greater depths of existence. Her passion is, quite simply, for movement; while she appreciates the structure and technique of many styles her focus is to blend them to create an endless string of movement undefined by vocabulary or nomenclature. Emily is a dancer, choreographer, director, competitor, teacher and most importantly a continual student. She learns from her many practices as well as the inspiring and privileged task of being a teacher. What she learns from her students goes beyond the constructs of the body into powerful lessons of life; she hopes that her teachings bring much more than movement into the lives of her students.
Ray Ulibarri - Dance & Fitness
Ray Ulibarri, since the young childhood realization of having to work as an adult, has aspired to be "an entertainer". As an only child he began his career early exploring the potential of his own expression through movement, voice and character; without any formal training he became a performer. He began to explore the arts in school and shined in both dance and theater quickly creating a voice for his artistic expression, truly recognizable as Ray. He has trained in a variety of styles including ballroom, Latin, swing, tango, salsa, hip hop, jazz, contemporary, improvisation and choreography. He is a Dance Vision International Dance Association (DVIDA) certified instructor and has completed the Personal Training Academy at the Community College
of Aurora. He will be pursuing a degree in Exercise Science at Metro Denver, and is anxious to begin applying fitness, science, and kinesiology to the arts. He continues his movement training with his professional partner Emily Doak through consistent, practice, performance, and creation. He believes that there is no boundary from one technique to another and that our bodies flourish when we open them up to possibility. He intends to explore the advantages of combining fitness training with dance and is certain the combination will have a worthy impact on both industries. He is consistently working to create performance opportunities for Melonlight Dance and all of its participants. Ray is a well-loved teacher and is naturally talented in his ability to individualize his interactions with each of his students, friends, and acquaintances. While true to his heart in each and every step, he possesses the adaptability, inspiration and charm of a constant performer.
